These are things that we use with our Shibas. They have worked for us, are Shiba-approved, and we recommend them. However, no one is required to use anything on this page! We have no financial relationship with any of these products, EXCEPT we do have an affiliate account with Dr. Bill's Pet Nutrition. This is a product in which we believe very strongly. The supplements have fantastic results, and the Shibas are obsessed with the taste. The company is local- Mountlake Terrace, WA. None of our puppy families are required to purchase or feed these supplements. We include them here because they have worked extremely well for us and many of our fellow show breeders.

X-Pens are an excellent way to confine your little bundle of joy while you're finishing their potty training, working, sleeping (if they don't sleep on your bed), or otherwise occupied and if you don't want them to have free run of the house. It's fine to allow them free run of the house (when I get a new puppy for our program, I allow them a lot of supervised free roam time), and you should never keep them confined to the playpen all the time, but pens can be a very useful tool during the puppy stage, especially for potty training. I feel that playpens are a much better option than confining them to a small crate. The babies spend the first few weeks in their whelping box in my bedroom, and then move to a large playpen in our living room (they're also allowed to have free run in the house several times per day). Since they're used to their playpen, transition should be fairly easy if you choose to use one. If you have carpet or are worried about your floors, you can get a cheap piece of linoleum/ sheet vinyl flooring from Lowes/ Home Depot to go under the playpen. Size it a little bigger than the pen, or else your precious baby will make chewing all of the edges their main goal.
The FXW (shown below in white) is my preferred indoor pen.
FXW: The 32" is a good height.

Please check with me to verify what food your baby is currently eating. I occasionally switch brands, and I will sometimes feed an all-life-stages food instead of puppy food, depending on whether I am keeping a puppy and the nutritional needs of the particular mom. I do send home a small bag of their current food- enough for several days, or enough to mix with new food if you are switching. It is absolutely fine to switch them to a different puppy food if you prefer. If you switch, mix their current and new food together for about a week, gradually increasing the percentage of new food vs current (guideline is start at 75% current/25% new, then 50/50, then 25/75) to avoid upset tummies. They need to be on a puppy food (or all-life-stages food) until they're about a year old. I recommend that you feed them the food that they're used to (what I send home with you) for the first couple days prior to introducing the new food.
One of my favorite puppy foods is Nulo Frontrunner Ancient Grains Puppy (I order mine from Chewy. Be cautious ordering dog food from Amazon).
Our Shibas adore these chicken treats. They're on the larger side, so we break them in half, thirds, or quarters for our adults. Some of our Shibes think that they should be allowed to play in the yard at bedtime, so we always give them a treat right before bed, after they're done pottying. It encourages them to come inside, even if they're feeling stubborn.
For puppies, we use kitchen shears to cut them into little pieces.
I buy these at Costco (in-store) for around $30 (3 lb bag, lasts a long time). They also have them on Chewy and Amazon.

They also love most of the treats from BarkBox.
If your Shiba will sleep on your bed, we strongly recommend you have stairs for them (unless your bed is low to the floor). Over the years, the repetitive impact from jumping off the bed can be hard on their joints. When choosing stairs, you should measure the distance from the floor to the top of your bed to ensure that you get stairs that are the proper height. The top stair doesn't need to be even with the top of your bed (it's fine if the stairs end a few inches below the top of the bed, the Shibas just treat it like another step).
Shibas love to chew. Shiba puppies REALLY love to chew, especially when they're getting rid of their puppy teeth and getting their adult ones. Shiba puppies are biologically hardwired to chew. They do some pretty intense chewing during the first year, and then they (usually) calm down a bit. But they still love to chew, even as adults. Cow ears and bully sticks will usually last them an hour or two, depending on the Shiba and age. Sometimes they'll last several sessions. Providing a variety of things for your Shiba to gnaw on has multiple benefits. It helps with boredom. It gives them an outlet. It helps to clean their teeth. Chew toys are the safest and most effective way to redirect your Shibas natural urge to chew.
PLEASE NEVER FEED RAWHIDE CHEWS. They are not digestible and can cause intestinal blockage, which can result in death. They can sit in the stomach for months, causing digestive upset. They are often made with chemicals and salt brines and are bad for your baby.
We like the chews shown below.
Cow ears are lower fat than pig ears and satisfy chewing urges. They use them in Japan to help clean and strengthen Shiba teeth.
Bully sticks (also good for cleaning teeth and satisfying chewing urges):
The teeny tiny ones I use for the babies (when you take your baby home, they're well able to handle the 12" ones, but these will still work for awhile). As adults, they'll devour the small ones quickly.
These are the bully sticks I get from Costco for my Shibas. Here is a link to them online, but if you order online you have to purchase them in a 2-pack. If you pick them up at your local Costco you can just buy a single pack and they're less expensive in-store too.

Beef cheeks are a lower value, longer lasting chew. They're dry/ non-greasy and don't have an odor. They last a significant amount of time (many days) and the Shibas like them.
Oh how my Shibas adore their beef trachea. They do feel a little bit greasy but don't have much of a smell. The Shibas will munch through them in about an hour.
These are more of a treat than a chew, since they crunch through them in a few minutes. But they really like them!
Natural Farm Nail-Free Chicken Feet Dog Treats (20 Pack), 100% Free-Range Air Dried Chicken Feet, No Nails, Fully Digestible, High Protein, Low Calorie, Joint Support, Single Ingredient
For longer-lasting chews, my Shibas (and I) love Nylabone PowerChew or DuraChew. I don't recommend the Nylabone puppy- they break apart. But the ones shown below last practically forever and don't have an odor like bully sticks do. My Shibas greatly prefer the variety packs I pick up from Costco, but they'll chew the other ones in a pinch. They're safe on the bed, in the toy box, on the carpet, etc. And the Shibas love to chew them! They're perfectly fine from the day you take your puppy home, and will last well into adulthood. You can allow your Shiba to have free access to these long-lasting chew toys at all times. My Shibas have some in the bedroom, some in their living room toy box, and some in their outside toy box.

Over the years, we've discovered some toys that Shibas really love. These are some of our favorites.
The Shibas love to chase the flirt poles. I like them because I don't have to run crazily around the yard, I can stand in one place. My son calls these "Shiba fishing poles", because he can always catch a puppy with them.
or
Chirping mice (or other animals). These are little cat toys that can be found on Amazon, Chewy, and in the cat section of pet stores (Petco, PetSmart, etc). The Shibas LOVE them. (Their favorite part is when the toy makes a chirping sound when they toss it around, bite it, paw at it, etc. So make sure you get the electronic ones, and not the boring silent ones)
The Shibas love these little squeaky toys. Most of them don't really care about the stump/ main part, so just getting the refill packs is fine. It doesn't have to be squirrels. They also have unicorns, foxes, bees, etc.
Zippy Paws and Outward Hound both make these little toys, and my Shibas have no preference.

All of my Shibas are OBSESSED with this Hyper Pet thing. They make noise and shake and are easy to haul around by the tail. 100% Shiba approved.
https://www.chewy.com/hyper-pet-doggie-tail-interactive-dog/dp/107983
The Hyper Pet toy also comes as a funny crab. The velcro closure on the crab isn't as well-protected as the original Hyper Pet thing, so I'm not sure how well it will hold up over time. My Shibas don't seem to have a preference between the two, they adore them both.
This ball is another Shiba obsession. It makes a hilarious noise and rolls easily. Miko thinks all of these belong to him and actively collects them.

Shibas don't seem to mind these donuts too much. I've found that Medium works best for my adults, even though the size chart would assign them a large. Large is too big and they have it off in no time. They do like a small pillow under their head when they're laying down or sleeping with the donut on. Otherwise their head falls to the side and I'd imagine they get a crick/ cramp in their neck.
Mine don't usually need these, the donut is usually enough. However, these surgical suits are good as an extra bit of protection if the donut isn't working. Medium fits best for most of my adults.
Slips over the head, buckles at the waist, secure, comfortable. Multiple colors available. Can order from Amazon or Ruffwear. My adults wear size Small. My teenagers wear X-Small. Higher priced, so it's fine to wait until your baby stops growing before investing in something like this.
$60
I really like these Kong harnesses. They're well-made, secure, comfy, and have a handy handle for Shiba wrangling/ maneuvering. My Shibas don't necessarily love the over-the-head part of putting on the Kong harnesses though. Unfortunately, they're a Petsmart exclusive and appear to be out of stock online (possibly available in store). The ones on Amazon are twice the price, and I wouldn't pay more for a Kong than for a Ruffwear. Most of my puppies fit a small. Medium for adults.
Petsmart: $45
I love these for growing puppies, and they do well for adults also (I haven't tested them yet with any super rambunctious Shibes). They buckle at the neck and at the waist. Comfy, secure, a gazillion colors. My teens wear a medium, puppies usually fit a small. Since they buckle at the neck, they're less upsetting to Shibas who don't like things going over their head, but more secure than a lot of step-in harnesses. I've found these to be one of the easier harnesses for putting on a struggling Shiba.
$15
I really like these as a more economical alternative to Ruffwear. Slips over the head, buckles at waist, secure, comfortable, multiple colors. A very nice option for a growing puppy (or adult). My adults wear size Medium, puppies & teens wear size small.
Unfortunately, Amazon is very hit or miss with having them in stock.
$20
The babies love these tunnels, and it helps to introduce them to new things. The babies will outgrow it soon after going to their new homes, but I wanted to share the link anyways.
Washable puppy pads can be less messy than disposables and are an excellent addition if you have easy access to a washer and dryer. There are a lot of washable pad options. I use a combination of brands and sizes. For the base, I like to use a pad that covers the entire pen. Then I layer a smaller pad on top, right in front of the gate. The area in front of the gate/ door is where your baby will have most of their accidents, and it's quick and easy to change out the smaller pad without needing to change the entire pen every time. FXW and EZ Whelp both make an excellent pen-sized pad and they're easily ordered on Amazon. FXW offers pad options for different pen configurations as well.
Smaller pads: put these near the door of the pen, on top of the full coverage pad. These can be changed out with ease more frequently.

I'm frequently asked if there's a book that I'd recommend for new Shiba puppy parents. There are a lot of puppy/ training books out there, and most of them are great! However, this book is the one that I've found most closely aligns with my philosophy on raising puppies. The author wrote a fantastic website article years ago, titled "Kidnapped From Planet Dog". I liked it so much that I included a link to it on the homepage of my website, as well pinning it at the top of the Starfire Facebook page. The author has recently expanded that article into a book titled "Welcoming Your Puppy From Planet Dog". When I read it, I can't count the number of times that I thought "that's what I say too!" You don't need to buy a puppy book. But if you're looking for a recommendation for one, this is the first one I'd get.
